ATK, Boeing vie for Israel missile defense

MINNEAPOLIS, March 27 (UPI) -- Boeing and ATK have joined forces to pursue the contract for Israel's short-range missile defense system.

The two U.S. defense contractors will pursue a partnership with Israel Aircraft Industries for the project to develop a means of defending Israel against multiple incoming rockets and long-range artillery rounds.

The Israeli Missile Defense Organization is expected to select the U.S.-Israeli team that will carry out the risk-reduction design phase of the SRBMD (Short-Range Ballistic Missile Defense) system sometime in the spring. Full-scale development and production phases of the program will follow as a cooperative initiative between the IMDO and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.

Minnesota-based ATK said in a release this week that it would design and fabricate the rocket motor and casing for the interceptor missile on behalf of Boeing at its plants in Mississippi and West Virginia.

The two companies have experience working together on projects for the Israeli military. They combined on the Arrow ballistic missile defense program as part of a team that also included Israel Aircraft Industries. ATK produces motors for the Arrow interceptors.
