Anti-Thaksin protests heat up in Thailand

BANGKOK, March 14 (UPI) -- Thousands rallied in the streets of Bangkok Tuesday demanding Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra step down over allegations of corruption and power abuses.

Students, business workers, activists and union members chanted "Thaksin get out!" as they marched through the streets to Government House, the premier's official residence, reports the BBC.

Tuesday's protest was the latest in a series of anti-Thaksin protests in the Thai capital following charges of corruption.

Thaksin allegedly sold his $1.9 billion family-owned company to a Singapore-based firm without paying taxes, a move that has been denounced as disloyal.

The demonstrations were peaceful, despite government warnings of possible violence. Protesters, some of whom held banners reading "Change through peace," insist they will remain in the streets until action is taken.

"I have been up all night, and I will stay here and protest until Thaksin goes," said one protester, who claimed to have attended all the recent anti-government rallies.
