Hundreds released from Abu Ghraib

BAGHDAD, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Hundreds of security detainees were released from Abu Ghraib prison Sunday, the American Forces Press Service reported.

About 500 security detainees were released from Abu Ghraib prison, AFIS said.

Those released were not guilty of serious or violent crimes -- such as bombing, torture, kidnapping, or murder -- and all had admitted their crimes, renounced violence, and pledged to be good citizens of a democratic Iraq, officials said.

Abu Ghraib remains a major security detention center for suspects captured in the continuing insurgency in Iraq. The high security prison was the spotlight for international controversy following the revelation of the abuse of prisoners there.
