CANBERRA, Australia, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Australia's decision to participate in the Iraq War has lost favor among backers of Prime Minister John Howard's coalition government.

According to a poll taken for The Weekend Australian, about 66 percent of Australians questioned do not now believe it was worthwhile to have invaded Iraq, an eight-point jump in disapproval from last year. Among coalition voters, only 43 percent of those questioned believed it was worthwhile, a seven-point drop from last December.

Australia has 1,320 troops in Iraq at present, including contingents training Iraqi security forces and protecting Japanese engineers.

Howard, despite public anxiety over a continued presence in Iraq, has echoed President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair in refusing to leave Iraq prematurely.
