BERLIN, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- The German opposition has called for Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier to step down over his role in the affair surrounding a German allegedly abducted by the CIA.
"If you trick the public in a way Mr. Steinmeier has done it, it's normally a reason to resign or get fired," Dirk Niebel, secretary general of the Free Democrats, told the daily Passauer Neue Presse.
Steinmeier Tuesday admitted he had known about the case of Khaled Masri since June 2004.
The Lebanese-born German citizen reportedly shares the name with a high-ranking al-Qaida terrorist. Masri claims he was abducted by the CIA in 2003 and held for five months in a prison in Afghanistan before he was released because the CIA learned it had the wrong man.
After his release, Masri informed the German government of the case. Steinmeier was informed of the incident in a letter from Masri's lawyer.
Until Tuesday's revelations, Steinmeier had claimed he knew nothing of the practice of rendition flights or CIA abductions in Europe.
