Terorr suspect threatened Sydney bridge

CANBERRA, Australia, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- An Australian terrorist suspect has threatened to fly a plane into the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Saleh Jamal, now in a Lebanese prison and being offered a deal by Australian police to give evidence against other Australian suspects, has admitted he would like to inflict a terrorist attack on Australia if he is released.

The Australian Federal Police have asked Jamal to give evidence against at least six accused Australian terror cell members he is alleged to have recruited. In return the Federal Police has said it would try to have him extradited from Lebanon and recommend to an Australian judge that he get a lesser sentence for plotting to attack the Sydney Harbor Bridge, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported Monday.

Jamal could still be sentenced to at least 10 years in jail. However, those who know him, although conceding he may be dangerous, suspect he has become deranged and that he was already in a fragile mental state before being tortured in Lebanon, the Herald Sun said.

"Putting things into perspective, this bloke wouldn't know how to fly a kite, let alone a plane," Lebanese Islamic spokesman Keysar Trad told the newspaper.
