The official, who did not want to be identified, added that none of the passengers, whose nationalities were not revealed, was hurt.

He said a booby-trapped car was detonated by remote control as an American military patrol passed in southwestern Baghdad, but did not report any casualties in that incident.

At least six Iraqis were killed and 16 were injured by another booby-trapped car in front of a gas station in al-Hadid near the city of Sammara, 62 miles (100 kilometers) north of the capital.

Iraqi police sources said the explosion also destroyed 15 cars that were lined up at the gas station to fill their tanks.

In a separate incident, three Iraqi troops were killed and two were wounded in an armed attack at an Iraqi army check-point in the city of Balad, 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Baghdad.
