MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Edmund Stoiber, who was slated to become work and technology minister in Germany's next government, said Tuesday he will not join Angela Merkel's Cabinet.
In a news conference, Stoiber announced he would not make the move to Berlin and would instead rather stay in his position as the premier of Bavaria. Stoiber, of the Christian Social Union, the Bavaria-only sister party of Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, said Franz Muentefering's resignation from his post as the head of the Social Democrats had shattered his last hopes in the SPD.
"Franz Muenetefering is an authority and a key building block of the grand coalition," he said. "The course of the Social Democrats at the moment is unclear. ... The changed situation has led me to believe that I can better serve the interests of the CSU by staying in Munich."
Stoiber, at the same time, recommended senior CSU lawmaker Michael Glos to take over his position as the federal work and technology minister.
Merkel is expected to accept the recommendation.
