Putin favors closer NATO, EU ties

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country was developing ties with both NATO and the European Union.

"We are actively developing relations with both organizations, NATO and especially the European Union," he told reporters Monday.

He said Russia would ensure its own defense posture first before building closer ties with defense blocs such as NATO.

"But of course we want to build and will build partnership with all countries and all associations, including NATO. In my view, our dialogue with the North Atlantic Alliance has been developing quite well in recent years," Putin said.
