Russia arrests former Gitmo detainees

NALCHIK, Russia, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Russian officials have arrested two men once detained by the United States in Guantanamo Bay, suspecting their involvement in Chechen separatist attacks.

Ruslan Odizhyev and Ruslan Kudayev were both arrested on suspicion of participating in the Oct. 14 attack on Nalchik, capital of the so-called autonomous region of Kabardino-Balkaria, which claimed over a hundred lives, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

A source in the Kabardino-Balkaria Ministry of Internal Affairs told the news service on condition of anonymity that his department had intelligence that the men "helped organize" the Nalchik attack, when dozens of heavily armed Chechen Islamic separatists attacked the headquarters in the city of federal and law enforcement agencies.

The source also said the information came from an anonymous tip.

Eight Russians who had been detained by the U.S. military at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba after being picked up during fighting in Afghanistan were released last year. All hailed from Muslim-majority ethnic enclaves in the Russian Federation, like Kabardino-Balkaria.
