PARIS, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- France's first Confucius institute is expected to begin classes in January 2006.
Inaugurated this week, the institute is part of the department of letters and languages at the University of Poitiers, and counts among 30 in the world dedicated to the ancient Chinese philosopher.
The institute is the result of a joint project between Poitiers and the University of Nanchang in southern China.
It will offer classes in Chinese, Asian civilization, and offer students the chance to prepare for Chinese language tests akin to the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
Altogether, the Chinese government hopes to expand to 100 the numbers of Confucian institutes around the world, Le Monde newspaper reported.
Plans are afoot to open two others in Paris and in southern France in the coming months, the French newspaper added.
