BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The EU Wednesday launched a new pro-market strategy designed to boost its
industry's competitiveness in relation to low-cost producers in emerging economies.
"There is no way back to the old days of protectionism and subsidies," said Industry Commissioner Gunther Verheugen. "Politicians don't create jobs. But we can create the right framework for industry to thrive."
In an attempt to nourish a more favorable business environment for European
manufacturers, the commission has set out to increase market access for EU products and introduce new measures to clamp down on east Asian counterfeiting and piracy.
The commission blueprint also strives to enhance competitiveness in
high-tech/skills sectors such as the pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical,
fashion and design industries.
The proposal comes the day after French President Jacques Chirac lashed out
at Brussels' industry policy. Speaking against the backdrop of nationwide
strikes, the septuagenarian leader ticked off the commission for refusing to
act while 1200 French workers face job losses after massive cutbacks
were announced by computer giant Hewlett Packard.
