It then removed its infrastructure, the synagogues, and the army spokesman announced Tuesday night that, "Following the completion of the evacuation of civilian and army infrastructure ... IDF (army) forces finished their permanent presence in the area of the evacuated communities."

Hundreds of Palestinians rushed to the old British fortress at Sanur raised their flags sang, danced, chanted national slogans and prayed in a by mosque that settlers has used for Jewish religious studies.

The area nevertheless remains "Area C" for which Israel bears full responsibility.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmad Qureia said in Ramallah he wanted that area to revert to full Palestinian rule.
