New trial for gmo opponents

PARIS, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Half a dozen people appeared in court Wednesday on charges of destroying a field of genetically modified crops in southern France.

The defendants are charged with destroying the crops in August, 2004. Their court hearing comes ahead of another, Sept. 20, in which nine people will be on trial for similar destruction of genetically modified plants. They include French Greens party lawmaker Noel Mamere, and anti-globalization activist, Jose Bove.

Bove, an implacable adversary of genetically modified plants is best known for driving a tractor into a McDonald's in Millau, France, to protest the restaurant's "bad" food.

The trials come as new reports indicate that genetically modified plants are gaining a growing foothold in France's agricultural landscape.
