"Raising the issue in both the Houses of Parliament, Indian lawmakers said Manjit Singh, the man sentenced to death, was actually Sarabjit Singh from Amritsar. Following insistence from lawmakers, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee directed to government to take appropriate action," The Hindu newspaper said Tuesday.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the death sentence upholding a Lahore High Court verdict that said the man was involved in several blasts across Pakistan.

His family said the verdict was a case of mistaken identity. The Court identified him as an agent of India's spy agency, Research and Analysis Wing.

"India has asked Pakistan to provide consular access to alleged Indian spy Sarabjit Singh," said an Indian Foreign Ministry official.

The officials in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad said the request for consular access was also made for 100 other Indian prisoners lodged in different Pakistani jails.

"The request was made before the Pakistan Supreme Court upheld the death sentence. We have not heard anything from the government so far," an official in Indian mission in Islamabad said.
