US seeks India's help in war on terror

CALCUTTA, India, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The United States wants India to help its global war on terror, America's envoy to India said Friday.

"The United States has gone on a global war against terrorism. We spend lot of time and money on this. We hope to receive assistance from other countries, including India," U.S. ambassador to India David C. Mulford told reporters in the northeast Indian city, according to a Press Trust of India report.

Mulford, who called on State Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee during his visit to what is widely regarded as India''s poorest major city, condemned the 350 bomb attacks in Bangladesh Wednesday saying "these type of activities are regrettable, unacceptable, irrespective of whether it takes place in New York City or Bangladesh".

Fighting terrorism, Mulford said, was a "high priority initiative" of the U.S. government. However, he did not discuss Bangladesh blasts or al- Qaida's alleged activities in Calcutta, during his hour-long meeting with Bhattacharjee, PTI said.

Instead, the U.S. envoy, accompanied by the new Consul General in Calcutta Henry Jardine dwelt on agricultural development in the state.

Mulford's comments reflected U.S. concerned over recurring terror strikes in different countries in recent months, including the serial blasts in Bangladesh, PTI said.
