India's army chief to visit Kashmir

NEW DELHI, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- India's army chief Gen. J.J. Singh is to visit border areas in Jammu and Kashmir to review counter-insurgency in the state.

The army has said the recent spurt in infiltration along the 483-mile line of control, the de facto border between India and Pakistan, showed no sign of dipping. Singh would be briefed about the situation along the LoC as well as the counter-insurgency in the hinterland.

India accuses Pakistan of training and abetting terrorists on its soil and sending them across the border. Islamabad denies the charge, however.

New Delhi has complained about increased infiltration and terrorist activity from across the LoC. Its intelligence agencies have compiled a dossier of 55 terror camps operating in Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, said the Times of India Express newspaper Wednesday.

"Around 2,000 to 2,500 terrorists are present in these camps," said General Singh.

He said the army killed more than 580 terrorists in Kashmir and had lost 80 officers and soldiers.
