Iran-India pipeline to help region prosper

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 26 (UPI) -- While Pakistan remains committed to its bilateral cooperation with Iran on the proposed pipeline, the deal is expected to reap additional economic benefits.

Pakistan and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to supply gas from Iran via a pipeline passing through Pakistani territory and destined for India.

Industry experts said the pipeline would create increased economic activity in the region in addition to meeting growing energy requirements of India and Pakistan in the wake of rapid industrial growth.

Addressing a news conference on his return from Afghanistan, Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasrui said Islamabad and Kabul have agreed there would be more flights, road and railway links between the two countries.

"Agreements have been signed in principle to this effect and both countries have signed agreement to expand railway track from Karachi to Spin Boldak," Kasrui said Sunday.
