Saudi terror alert for Americans

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, July 20 (UPI) -- The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia warned Wednesday of possible terror attacks in the oil-rich kingdom.

"The U.S. embassy in Riyadh advises all American citizens living in Saudi Arabia that it has received indications of operational planning for a terrorist attack or attacks in the kingdom," the embassy in the Saudi capital Riyadh said in a statement.

The statement said the embassy had no specific information concerning the timing, target or method of possible attack. However, it urged U.S. citizens to keep a low profile and remain highly vigilant and avoid visiting commercial establishments frequented by Westerners.

Saudi Arabia has been battling the al-Qaida terror group and its allied militants since May 2003 when they launched a triple suicide bombing attack on Western housing compounds in Riyadh.

The pro-Western kingdom was the home of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and 15 of the 19 terrorists behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States were Saudi citizens. However, the Saudi security forces have enjoyed great success against the terrorist organization over the past year, eliminating at least three of its operational chiefs in the kingdom in quick succession.
