Pakistan declines supporting OIC's UN bid

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 7 (UPI) -- Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri said that Pakistan will not support an OIC bid for a UN position. Kasuri stated that his country will not support an Organization of Islamic Conference proposal to seek a United Nations Security Council permanent seat for the Muslim world for the simple reason that Islamabad believes the proposition has no chance of success.

Kasuri added that should such a proposal succeed people of other faiths would also make similar demands. Pakistan is opposed to the BIDS BY India, Germany, Japan and Brazil bid for permanent Security Council seats as well.

Other OIC members endorsed Pakistan's position on the merits of it "Uniting For Consensus" approach developed along with Italy, under which Asia would get five seats and Africa six non-permanent Security Council seats, adding, "If this proposal got approval, at least five to six Muslim countries would be strong candidates for the membership."
