PARIS, June 30 (UPI) -- Spain became the fourth country to pass a law legalizing gay marriage.
The Spanish parliament passed the measure Thursday morning, as widely expected.
Just two days earlier, lawmakers from Canada's lower house adopted similar legislation.
Canada's senate is expected to pass it as well, making the same-sex marriage law definitive by July's end.
Spain's more conservative senate had rejected the measure, but the body is an advisory one only.
Same-sex marriage legislation was a key part of wide-ranging social reforms announced by the leftist government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, when it came to power last year.
It also vowed to reduce abortion and divorce restrictions, and battle domestic violence.
