WASHINGTON, June 20 (UPI) -- Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., Monday called on the House Governmental Affairs committee to subpoena Pentagon documents relating to Halliburton contracts in Iraq.

According to Waxman, the Pentagon paid Halliburton $1.6 billion out of the Development Fund for Iraq, which is financed by money generated by Iraqi oil sales, and the successor to the terminated Oil for Food program. Within those contracts, Halliburton overcharged the Defense Department about $177 million for the import of oil into Iraq, according to Waxman.

The United Nations has not been granted access to the investigation reports of the Halliburton contracts, although it is supposed to oversee Development Fund for Iraq expenditures.

Waxman wants documents released "that would expose why U.S. officials withheld (information) from international auditors," he said in a statement. The Pentagon gave the United Nations its audit reports but blacked out more than 400 items, according to Waxman.

The Pentagon says the information was redacted to protect trade secrets, as required by law.

The House Governmental Affairs Committee is holding a hearing Tuesday in Washington to review the management of Development Fund for Iraq cash.
