UNITED NATIONS, June 20 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Chief of Staff Mark Malloch Brown has announced the appointment of a new chief spokesman and a deputy.
He said Stephane Dujarric, of France, would be the next spokesman for the secretary-general, replacing Fred Eckhard, who is retiring at the end of the month and had been spokesman since Annan became secretary-general in 1997. Marie Okabe was named to be Dujarric's deputy spokesman.
They have been working under Eckhard as associate spokesmen.
Malloch Brown said both had worked in the media, with Dujarric having been a producer for ABC News in London, New York and Paris, with assignments in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, while Okabe had written and edited for United Press International in New York, Tokyo and Washington.
