India, U.S. step up high-tech cooperation

NEW DELHI, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- The United States has agreed to step up bilateral high-technology commerce with India by setting up an India-U.S. High Technology Cooperation Group of senior representatives of relevant departments of both countries, news reports said Friday.

U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Kenneth I. Juster said in Bombay that the U.S. delegation reviewed with its Indian counterpart the current state of bilateral high-technology trade, including trade in U.S.-controlled "dual use" items.

The Business Line newspaper reported that two sides agreed to "think boldly and creatively about steps that could be taken to further enhance high technology trade in a way that reflects their countries' new relationship and common strategic interests".

Juster said that the areas of cooperation include space and civil and nuclear technologies.

The proposed group would work toward developing a statement of principles governing bilateral cooperation in high-technology trade that advances relationship in this area, including addressing ways to increase trade in "dual use" goods and technologies.

The two sides also reaffirmed the countries' shared commitment to and common interest in preventing proliferation of strategic goods and technology and resolved to further enhance their export control co-operation, the newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, another U.S. official, Under Secretary Alan Larson, said that New Delhi and Washington were working closely to push for reforms on the contentious issue of intellectual property rights. During his visit to Bombay, Larson emphasized on the protection of intellectual property rights and its benefits for economic growth.
