Ireland sets date for key EU election

BRUSSELS, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern put an end to months of speculation Thursday by setting an Oct. 19 date for a referendum on the Nice Treaty. The European Union blueprint is seen as essential for the future expansion of the 15-member bloc. The election will be held on a Saturday for the first time in Ireland's history.
