Jordan, Egypt discuss Mideast violence

CAIRO, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The leaders of Egypt and Jordan met Tuesday for a brief round of talks on regional and international efforts to end the ongoing violence in the Palestinian territories, according to Egyptian diplomatic sources.

Talks between Jordan's King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak focused on coordinating efforts with the United States and the European Union to end the fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, said the sources.

The leaders also focused on other regional issues, including bilateral relations leading up to the Arab League summit scheduled for March 27-28 in Beirut, Lebanon.

Sources also said Abdullah briefed Mubarak on his recent talks with U.S. officials in Washington. The Egyptian president is scheduled to visit Washington for talks with President Bush on March 5.

Mubarak is expected to discuss with Bush the U.S. initiative for bringing Israeli and Palestinian leaders back to the negotiating table. They are also expected to thrash out the possible expansion of the international war on terror to other Middle Eastern countries, in particular, Iraq.
