ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The Taliban on Friday suspended all political activities and ceased collecting donations, according to the Afghan militant group's ambassador to Pakistan.
"We have decided to suspend all political activities and organizational matters, as well as stop the collection of donations for an unidentified period," said Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef. He asked all Taliban sympathizers not to send donations to anyone associated with the group inside or outside Pakistan, a Pakistani news agency reported.
Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammed Omar launched the hard-line Islamic Movement from southern Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 1994.
In less than three years, the Taliban wrested control of more than 90 percent of Afghanistan including its capital, Kabul.
Meanwhile, the family of Taliban commander Jalalluddin Haqqani has fled their in home in Peshawar, Pakistan. Their whereabouts are unknown, according to local sources.
Last week, authorities asked them to vacate the residence, which was provided by the Pakistani government.
