MOSCOW, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The United States' diplomatic mission was not recruiting Russia's Afghan war veterans to fight in Afghanistan, the U.S. envoy to Moscow told reporters Monday.
Ambassador Alexander Vershbow said recent Internet advertisements seen on a U.S. government Web site calling war veterans to arms were bogus.
Vershbow stressed the ads were in no way related to the U.S. government and should therefore be ignored.
Thousands of retired Russian soldiers and officers had served in the former Soviet Union's military during its 10-year occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s.
