Russia solves lawmaker's murder

MOSCOW, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Russian investigators announced Sunday they have detained a man who claimed he ordered last week's killing of a Russian legislator, Russia's NTV television reported.

Saigid-Batal Uzunayev confessed to authorities that he was behind the death of Arsen Kammayev, an official from Russia's southern province of Dagestan.

Police also detained the three assassins who allegedly killed Kammayev on Tuesday.

According to Uzunayev, he ordered Kammayev killed after learning that the legislator had ordered his death.

Uzunayev said Kammayev had paid $50,000 to have him killed and cited their ongoing feud as the chief motive behind Kammayev's decision.

The spat between the two officials started several years ago when Kammayev was the Novolaksky district chief, a position that eventually went to Uzunayev, NTV reported.

Uzunayev, however, did not tell officials Sunday the origin of their dispute.

Kammayev and his friend, Abdulkhalik Musayev, were killed near Kammayev's home in Makhachkala Tuesday when a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire from a nearby car.

Kammayev died instantly, while Musayev returned fire and died several hours later from gun shot wounds in a Makhachkala hospital.

Investigators found a torched vehicle several blocks away from the scene of crime. Inside the car was a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

According to investigators, the gunmen set the car on fire before fleeing the scene in another vehicle.

Uzunayev asked investigators to release the gunmen saying he would claim full responsibility for the killing.
