Armitage in Moscow for talks

MOSCOW, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage arrived in Moscow Wednesday night to hold a round of talks on the war against terrorism with his Russian counterpart, Deputy Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Trubnikov.

Armitage arrived just as Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov departed for the United States, where he is to meet secretary of State Colin Powell to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and prepare for the summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush, which is to take place at Bush's Texas ranch in mid-November.

Moscow has become a hub of diplomatic activity as the West seeks to forma new partnership with Russia in the fight against international terrorism.

On Wednesday, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw held extensive talks in Moscow with Ivanov, praising Russia for its role as an ally of London and Washington.
