LONDON, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A solar plant built on a disused airfield in the United Kingdom is now meeting the energy demands of 10,000 average homes, energy company RWE said.

RWE announced its Kencot Hill solar park was completed and connected to the British grid, adding 37 megawatts to the regional power sector.

Apart from its supply, the company said Thursday it will help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere by 16,000 tons per year.

British clean energy advocates have complained about national investment policies on renewable power. Long term, it puts more emphasis on what it considers less established sources of renewable energy like wave and tidal power than it does on established technologies like onshore wind and solar power.

Amber Rudd, a British member of parliament, addressed a solar energy conference in London in mid-October, saying the government expects to see at least 10 gigawatts of solar power on the grid by 2020, especially if the industry itself is able to drive down costs.
