HOUSTON, May 29 (UPI) -- Oil services company KBR announced it signed an engineering contract to help Maersk Oil develop its Culzean project in the British waters of the North Sea.

KBR, which has headquarters in Houston, will provide front-end engineering and design work for three platforms the Dutch energy company plans to use for a field situated about 145 miles east of Aberdeen, Scotland, in the North Sea.

"We are excited to be working together with Maersk Oil to mature this important gas facility in the North Sea," Roy Oelking, KBR hydrocarbons group president, said in a statement Wednesday.

Maersk announced its discovery at the Culzean field in 2011, describing it then as one of the more promising finds in the British sector of the North Sea in recent years.

KBR's contract is the second platform award from Maersk for the Culzean field this month. It followed a $420 million deal made last week with U.S. rig company Hercules Offshore.

The financial terms for the contract between Maersk and KBR were not disclosed.
