Turbine installation begins for 295MW German wind farm

ESSEN, Germany, May 20 (UPI) -- German energy company RWE Innogy said Tuesday it started installing the 48 turbines for the Nordsee Ost wind farm off the country's coast.

"Since mid-March all of the marine foundations have been firmly anchored to the sea bed," project director Marcel Sunier said in a statement. "Commencement of the turbine installation now signals the second phase."

The 48-turbine wind farm, which RWE says is among the largest of its kind for Germany, will provide at its peak 295 megawatts of power, enough to meet the annual electricity demands of 300,000 German households.

Germany aims to rely on wind power to meet the bulk of its renewable energy needs. For European member states, the country had the highest level of carbon dioxide emissions last year.

Nordsee Ost will be connected to the German energy grid by early 2015.
