ZUG, Switzerland, March 4 (UPI) -- Engineering company Foster Wheeler said Tuesday it landed a contract to build a liquefied natural gas terminal from Kuwait National Petroleum Co.

Foster Wheeler said it was awarded a contract for preliminary engineering design for an LNG import terminal expected to start commercial operations in 2020.

The company said the terminal will have an initial design capacity to process 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. Future expansions could add more storage to the facility.

In a 2013 country report, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said Kuwait has put more emphasis on natural gas exploration and development to meet domestic demand. The country is a net importer of natural gas

Foster Wheeler didn't disclose the value of the contract. There was no statement from the Kuwait National Petroleum Corp.

EIA estimates Kuwait holds 63 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves.
