Lee Peacock made the observation in discussing the transport of oil from the eastern Utah basin, which is associated with the so-called Green River shale reserve area
The U.S. Energy Information Administration has said the area,"by some estimates, could be the world's largest oil resource."
Companies are shipping oil from the basin to the state's North Salt Lake oil refinery by truck. Peacock told KUTV Thursday oil deliveries require 250 trips by truck per day.
"From our prospective, pipelines are much more efficient and safe, as far as moving the product, than our trucks," he said.
Tesoro Corp., a company with headquarters in Texas, wants to build a 135-mile oil pipeline underground to facilitate deliveries to the refinery, KUTV said.
The pipeline could take three years to complete if approved.
KUTV reported the 12-inch diameter pipeline could deliver 60,000 barrels of oil per day.
