BEIJING, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Renewable energy in the northwest Chinese province of Xinjiang accounted for about 30 percent of its total energy output, Chinese government statistics show.

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's branch of the official State Grid Corp. of China showed the province last year installed more than 1.3 billion kilowatts of wind, hydro and solar power combined, Xinhua reported Sunday.

In 2010, China started a program to link Xinjiang's grid to the rest of the country.

The International Energy Agency said in a market report published in December that China, India and Brazil were among the world leaders in the deployment of renewable energy.
