Azerbaijan firm to discuss TAPI pipeline study with Afghan officials

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- An engineering company in Azerbaijan said Monday it would discuss, with Afghan officials, a feasibility study for a multilateral gas pipeline from Turkmenistan.

ASPI Consulting Engineers Inc. said it was handling the preliminary aspects of the study for the planned Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India natural gas pipeline.

"We ... will have to send our experts to Kabul for consultations with the Afghan side," said a statement from the company published Monday by news agency Azerbaijan Business Center.

The company said the study, once formally launched, would take 18 months.

Representatives from Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India met last year in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, to sign a transaction advisory services agreement. That cleared the way for the Asian Development Bank to look for a consortium to find the money needed to build the $7.8 billion pipeline.

Pakistan and India would each get 1.3 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and Afghanistan would get 500 million cubic feet of gas per day from the pipeline from Turkmenistan.
