Siemens contract readies Statoil for offshore wind

STAVANGER, Norway, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Norwegian energy company Statoil Tuesday awarded engineering contracts to Siemens for the Dudgeon wind farm off the British coast, which will be ready by 2017.

"The new turbine contract will secure planned progress in the Dudgeon project towards full operation during 2017," Siri Espedal Kindem, Statoil renewable energy senior vice president, said in a statement.

Siemens, a German engineering company, secured two contracts from Statoil for the supply and assembly of 67 wind turbine generators for the Dudgeon wind farm.

Statoil estimates the value for both contracts at $848 million. There was no comment from Siemens on the deal.

Dudgeon is Statoil's second commercial offshore wind project. The 67 turbines planned off the coast of Norfolk will together provide more than 400 megawatts of energy at peak capacity, enough to meet the energy demands of 400,000 households.

The British government hopes to generate 30 percent of the country's electricity from renewable resources by 2020.
