Ireland seeks advice on emissions

DUBLIN, Ireland, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Irish Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte said he was soliciting consultation on ways to reduce the amount of carbon emissions from the electricity sector.

"Over the coming months my department will be evaluating options that can lower emissions from electricity generation while maintaining economic competitiveness and ensuring that everyone can afford to heat and power their homes," he said in a statement Monday.

The Irish government said about 11.5 million tons of carbon dioxide are emitted from the electricity sector each year. That represents more than 20 percent of the country's total emissions.

The government said sectors of the economy with "significant" emissions are required to take steps to decrease their environmental footprint by 2050. Ireland says reducing emissions are "vital" for a country eager to do its part in addressing climate change.

"I encourage interested parties to participate in this consultation and let us know your views on what is achievable in Ireland," Rabbitte said.

The consultation period runs through the end of the year.
