HOUSTON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- BP's vice president in charge of environmental restoration, Laura Folse, said data published from the 2010 oil spill will aid recovery in the Gulf of Mexico.
BP unveiled a website -- gulfsciencedata.bp.com -- that contains data collected from the 2010 oil spill in the gulf.
"Making the data and supporting information available in a usable format is part of BP's ongoing effort to keep the public informed about potential injuries to, and the recovery of, natural resources in the gulf," Folse said in a statement Monday.
Data were collected by federal and state agencies, as well as BP, as part of an effort to assess the damage from the 2010 spill.
BP said approximately 2.5 million barrels of oil were spilled into the gulf in 87 days. An accident at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig left 11 workers dead and led to one of the worst oil spills in the history of the industry.
BP said the first set of data includes information on how much oil degraded and analytical chemistry results from water samples in the region.
BP said more data releases are planned in 2014.
