WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- U.S.-Norway cooperation on carbon-capture technology will help make fossil-fuel-based industries cleaner, Norwegian Energy Minister Tor Lien said.
Lien met in Washington with U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz to discuss developments at a network of carbon-capture test centers established last year in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Norway.
"We have agreed to move the cooperation within carbon capture to a new level," Lien said in a statement Thursday.
The International Energy Agency lauds carbon-capture technology as a way to cut carbon dioxide emissions from the industrial sector. The technology aims to retain waste emissions from large sources of pollution like power plants.
Moniz announced during the meeting his department selected more than a dozen projects across the country to work to improve the efficiency and drive down costs of carbon capture geared toward coal-fired power plants.
"Any serious effort to protect future generations from the worst effects of climate change must also include developing, demonstrating and deploying the technologies to use our abundant fossil fuel resources as cleanly as possible," he said.
