MELBOURNE, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Natural reserves from the Kipper Tuna Turrum project in Australia could meet the long-term energy needs of 1 million people, Exxon Mobil said.
Exxon said it started operations at the project in Bass Strait, along Australia's southern coast. Exxon said the project is set to be the largest domestic oil and gas development on the eastern seaboard.
"The Kipper Tuna Turrum project will help secure east Australia's energy future, and holds enough energy to power a city of 1 million people for 35 years," Richard Owen, chairman of Exxon Mobil Australia, said in a statement Tuesday.
Combined, the three Exxon projects -- Kipper, Tuna and Turrum -- hold at least 1.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 110 million barrels of oil and gas liquids.
Exxon said the operation would help extend the life of projects from Bass Strait, producing natural resources for more than 40 years.
