WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Delivery of petroleum and petroleum products on U.S. rail systems helped make September one of the busiest months on record, an industry trade group said.

The Association of American Railroads said Thursday petroleum and petroleum product delivery for September was up 10.4 percent when compared with the same time last year.

The AAR said 13,426 carloads, or approximately 8.7 million barrels of oil, were delivered on U.S. railways during the week ending Sept. 28.

Including all commodity groups, AAR said "only the Labor Day holiday prevented [September] from being the highest-volume intermodal month in history."

The U.S. Energy Department said August oil production of 7.6 million barrels per day was the highest monthly total in 24 years. That higher rate of crude oil production has put a strain on existing pipeline capacity.

The department's Energy Information Administration said railroads used 15 percent less diesel fuel last year than they did in 2000. The administration said, however, less tonnage was moved on U.S. rail systems.
