'Hump Day' commercial: Connecticut students banned from quoting Geico ad
WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- The president of the Natural Resources Defense Council said the United States is making "real progress" on cutting pollution but more work can be done.
Frances Beinecke said in a statement Thursday the U.S. government needs to target emissions and encourage renewable energy developments to meet its goals.
"We're making real progress on cutting the dangerous carbon pollution that's driving climate change," she said. "To hit the target, keep our promise and protect our children from climate chaos, we have to build on that progress."
The U.S. State Department published a draft 2014 Climate Action Report highlighting progress made on President Barack Obama's commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent below their 2005 levels by 2020.
The State Department said the 2020 goals were ambitious but achievable.
"[Progress] includes doubling electricity generation from wind and solar, establishing new fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks and promoting efficiency in our homes and businesses," the department said.
