SEVILLE, Spain, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Spanish energy company Abengoa announced Monday it was tasked with building a 70 megawatt wind farm worth an estimated $165 million in Uruguay.
Abengoa said it would build a wind farm in Palomas, Uruguay. The project is expected to generate 70 MW of energy and prevent the emissions of more than 140,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year.
"Abengoa will be responsible for the development, engineering and construction of the plant, as well as its subsequent operation and maintenance for a 20-year period," the company said in a statement Monday.
The company said the 70 MW of wind energy generated would be enough to meet the annual energy demands of approximately 100,000 people.
The Palomas wind farm means Abengoa has three wind farms under development in Uruguay. Two 50 MW wind farms are covered under a 20-year purchase agreement with the Uruguayan state electricity company, the National Administration of Power Plants and Electrical Transmissions.
Abengoa said construction on the 70 MW wind farm is expected to begin in early 2014 and take 14 months to complete.
