Gulf of Mexico to host deepest gas pipeline

PARIS, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Energy services company Technip said Friday it would work on the installation of the world's deepest underwater gas pipeline, planned for the Gulf of Mexico.

The French company said it secured an award by Shell Offshore Inc. to develop pipeline infrastructure for its Stones field. The project is set for the Gulf of Mexico at a water depth of approximately 9,500 feet, nearly 2 miles underwater.

"With greater depths come greater challenges for our clients and we are delighted to help Shell push back subsea frontiers by laying the deepest gas pipeline worldwide," Technip Senior Vice President for North America David Dickson said in a statement Friday.

Technip said its work would support plans by Shell to build its first floating, production, storage and offloading unit in the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell in May announced plans for its ultra deep water FPSO. The Stones reserve area lies in waters 200 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The company said the first phase of development should give up 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per year at its peak.

Technip will perform its pipeline work in Texas and Alabama. It said it plans to start installing the pipeline in the second half of 2014.
