More LNG shipments to Egypt from Qatar

Aug. 20, 2013 at 8:20 AM   |   Comments

CAIRO, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A source in the Qatari Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it was responding to Egyptian needs with further natural gas shipments.

Egypt descended into chaos after the military ousted President Mohamed Morsi in early July.

Tight demand for energy in Egypt exacerbated frustration with post-revolution political developments and in June, the government said Qatar agreed to send five shipments of LNG as a gift to address summer energy needs.

Daily News Egypt reported Tuesday there were conflicting reports about that status of LNG shipments from Qatar. Citing a report from Arabic-language Egyptian newspaper al-Borsa, it said a source in the Egyptian government said gas talks with Qatar were suspended. Daily News Egypt said the government denied the claims.

State-run media in Qatar, however, announced Tuesday a source from the foreign ministry confirmed a shipment of LNG left its ports for Egypt to help alleviate power plant shortages, the Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA, reports.

International oil companies operating in Egypt said they've either suspended their operations because of the political violence or removed some of their staff. Exploration activity offshore was ongoing.
