HOUSTON, July 29 (UPI) -- Oklahoma drilling activity increased the most during the last full week in July but Texas still leads in onshore work, an energy analysis said.
For the second quarter of the year, oil services company Baker Hughes counted 8,800 new wells in service in the United States. More than 3,000 of them came from the Permian and Eagle Ford basins spread across southern states.
The company reported Oklahoma gained five units for the week ending Friday to reach 176 rigs.
Texas had the most onshore activity with 848 rigs.
Baker Hughes reported 1,776 total rigs active in the United States for the week, a 7.7 percent decline from the same time last year.
Onshore rigs gained five units for the reporting period compared to one offshore.
Oil and natural gas production in the United States is increasing because of new drilling technologies onshore. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has helped bring oil imports to record lows for the country.
There were more oil rigs active in the United States than natural gas rigs during the reporting period.
