British poll to weigh EU climate partnership

LONDON, May 21 (UPI) -- The British government said it wants to know from the public whether EU membership helps or inhibits work on the environment and climate change.

British Prime Minister David Cameron in January said frustration with policies from the European Union has grown and the British people would "have their say" on EU membership in a 2015 referendum.

The British departments of Environment and Energy and Climate Change launched a 12-week consultation period to review the influence that EU membership has on climate issues.

"Groups will be asked about issues such as how far they think the U.K. might benefit from the EU taking more or less action on the environment and climate change and whether EU legislation provides the right balance between protecting the environment and the wider U.K. economic interest," the government said.

The British government is committed to a goal of having 30 percent of the country's electricity generated by renewable resources by 2020. That's more ambitious than EU targets for 2020.

The consultation period closes in August. The government said it would publish the findings during the upcoming winter.
