Mozambique gas a triumph for Anadarko

HOUSTON, April 19 (UPI) -- The latest natural gas discovery offshore Mozambique is part of a long story of successful exploration, an official at Anadarko Petroleum said.

Anadarko Petroleum Corp., which has headquarters in Houston, announced it encountered around 190 net feet of natural gas pay at its Orca-1 discovery well offshore Mozambique in an area dubbed Offshore Area 1.

Anadarko Vice President for Exploration Bob Daniels said the company is designing a two-well appraisal program to determine the extent of the deep-water Orca find.

"Discovering another large, distinct and separate natural gas accumulation in the Offshore Area 1 continues our outstanding exploration success offshore Mozambique," he said in a statement.

In December, Italian energy company Eni announced it signed a deal with Anadarko to develop common natural gas reserves offshore Mozambique and options for liquefied natural gas. Eni's discovery last year of at least 7 trillion cubic feet of gas offshore Mozambique was considered by one of its largest ever.

Anadarko executives said last year they estimated its exploration area off Mozambique holds at least 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
